dance #31

On the old and the new

“…All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues…”

Excerpt from “Praise song for a day” by Elizabeth Alexander, read at the Inauguration Ceremony of President Barack Obama.

dance #31

12:20 a.m. A 3 minute dance in the study. The dance rattled tiny objects stowed away in the cabinet that holds my great-grandfather’s sewing machine (he was a tailor who ran a shop on Parliament Street). The cabinet became a physical support for the dance. An ancestor from an old world on my tongue, orienting my movements, transforming now into something new from something old. Standing in the presence of something so new.

Alice bright and interactive. A chilling night. -29 degrees Celsius with the windchill.
