Haecceity II: A hovering
6:00 p.m. Riding the 196 bus. We lurch forward up to the stoplight and I catch sight of a bird hovering over a field. Wings wide, flapping, then resting. It is suspended. It is pushing into the air, but not going anywhere. A hovering. A wind gathers up and just doesn’t give. Flying nowhere. A bus and a bird caught together in a dance. We reach the light and turn left into the road. I’m caught, and I swerve to hold my gaze on this hovering. I lurch back in my seat to watch from the window behind, arcing back as the bus launches forward. The bird, still hovering, falls back out of view. I feel like I’m getting pulled away too fast. A plane appears overhead. Hovering, wings wide spread. The bus ducks under a bridge and I get drawn back into the bus and to the people tuned in to their own worlds. A woman covered in a black burka next to me listening to an MP3 player. Bodies lurching. Bus reeling. It’s 10:00 p.m. now. Alice missed me today. The sun came out after an abundance of rain, and the night is cool.
