Homemaking
10:30 p.m. Lower East Side, Manhattan. Robin makes up a bed for me to sleep in. She’s vacuuming the futon laid out flat. Holding the long nozzle, her body is tall, and curved over. Her elbows make fine upward gestures as she catches and releases the mattress with the suction. Delicate touches. Quick, gentle licks of pressure. Machine and body entangled in a little dance. Robin laboured all day to craft a marvelous dinner friends in honour of my arrival. Magnificent! I sleep well after a long day of travel between two cities that are remarkably close to one another.
