Aspen poles and power toolsdance #211, aspen poles and power tools

4:30-p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Building shelves with Marty in her cabin at the Prajna Mountain Forest Refuge in the heart of New Mexico, 9000 feet closer to the sky. This lush valley is glorious. We work with freshly lacquered aspen poles and old planks, using power tools to cobble together a set of shelves behind her wood stove.  My body learns how to hold these materials, how to move with the tools, and how to fit myself inside this tight little space nestled in the corner of her cabin. Elbows angular, body reaching, curving, miniaturizing movements, and exerting force into the machine to propel screws through layers of wood.  An amazing experience. It was a gorgeous day full of incredible sky. I draw by flashlight as I settle in for the night in my little pup tent tucked in under a tall pine.
